November was a huge month of giving for Coleman Elementary. Students collected over 1,000 items during the school food drive, providing meals to families for Thanksgiving. The Gray Summit Masonic Lodge made a donation to purchase coats, shoes, and clothing, and the Local 513 Operating Engineers donated coats to our students who are in need. The Coleman Elementary community is so thankful for the support and generosity of our students and local organizations. You are all Difference Makers!

Last week, 4th graders had their field trip to JA BizTown. While exploring and working, students had the chance to discover careers, build financial skills, collaborate with classmates, exercise civic duties, invest in the community, and more!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Have you ever wondered why the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade started and the story behind the giant balloons? Our 3rd grade students can tell you all about it. Last week, they read "Balloons Over Broadway". The true story of Tony Sarg, the master puppeteer, and original creator of the balloons. In addition, our 3rd graders brainstormed, planned, and created their own balloons on Broadway. They watched a video about how the real Thanksgiving Day parade floats are made. So much creativity!

If you are having a hard time finding a turkey for Thanksgiving, you may have to look a little bit closer. Families at Coleman were given the challenge of disguising a Turkey as a book character to keep it from being eaten. This project went along with the book "Turkey Trouble". So many good ideas.

St. Bridget of Kildare will host its traditional Thanksgiving Dinner this Thursday, 11/28, at 223 W. Union St. in Pacific. All are welcome to partake, donate, and/or volunteer! Call 636-271-3993 x201 for info.

This week, second grade celebrated the end of their Ancient Greek Civilization unit in reading with Potato Olympics! Students' potatoes participated in the Olympic events of gymnastics, bowling, rolling, and dancing. This activity incorporated math, teamwork, sportsmanship, creativity, and a whole bunch of fun.

First grade finished Unit 3 in CKLA. In celebration, students dressed up to celebrate their unit on "Different Lands, Similar Stories”. There were three sections each containing similar stories from different lands. These included Cinderella, The Girl with the Red Slippers, and Billy Beg. In every story they lost a shoe and ended up getting married. The End!

Lots of fun this evening at McTeacher Night. So many friends and families visiting. We raised a little over $500. Thank you Pacific McDonalds.

Before heading into the #MVNation Fall Break next week, "share a slice of life." Give blood at the Coleman Elementary Blood Drive this Friday, Nov. 22, from 1:30-5:30 PM. Visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter ColemanES to schedule an appointment.

3rd Grade had a great performance this evening. Students had fun entertaining their families with their silly songs. Songs about tongue twisters, jokes, cows that say bow-wow, and a fun rendition of LOL to the YMCA, had people dancing in their seats. Do you know why gorillas have big nostrils? Because they have big fingers.

In celebration of Veteran's Day, our students and staff gathered for a special assembly. Students learned about the history of Veterans Day, and we honored the Veteran's in attendance. Thank you for your service.

2nd graders in Mrs. Canada's class have been using the scientific method and observing an ongoing experiment in their unit on matter.
They made a hypothesis on which bread would create the most amount of mold. Students were split into 3 groups. One group washed their hands with soap and water, one with sanitizer, and another had dirty hands. Each group touched a slice of bread afterwards. The 4th slice of bread students voted on. Students voted to wipe the piece of bread on the floor after the custodians cleaned the cafeteria floor. Students observed and analyzed each slice of bread for 3 weeks. Students took field notes and recorded their observations.

Coleman Warriors recently completed a service learning project for participants of the Greater St. Louis Honor Flight. Honor Flight is a not-for-profit organization that celebrates the veterans of our country by giving them a Day of Honor, which includes a flight to Washington D.C. Veterans tour the memorials, enjoy comradery, and are welcomed back after their flight home. To show appreciation for their service to our country, Coleman students wrote personalized letters and made pictures that were given to them during mail call on their return flight. The Veterans on this trip included members of the Korean and Vietnam Wars (photos courtesy of gslhonorflight.org). #MVNation

Our thoughts are with each of you as we navigate the flooding affecting our community. To prioritize the safety of our students and staff, the Meramec Valley R-III School District will be closed on Thursday, November 7th, and Friday, November 8th.
During this challenging time, we encourage our staff who are able or willing to volunteer to lend a hand to neighbors, help with sandbagging, or join cleanup efforts once the waters recede. Together, our community will emerge stronger by supporting one another.

Don’t Forget - Set clocks back one hour tonight, and exercise your right to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 5th! #MVNation
