Nike’s 4th grade leaders helped construct the banks and delivered to each classroom where they told their younger peers about donating to a community cause. They also explained what each project aimed to help with. Then they gathered the collection jars daily and counted the money collected. They displayed this data on a chart in the school common area. They learned about checks and balances in dealing with cash and doing deposits as well as charting and graphing results.
In total the school raised $ for the Franklin County Humane Society, which was a student selected cause. Part of this lesson included the idea of respecting others' views and choices. Therefore, a second cause was selected and involves the construction of a Little Free Pantry here at Nike Elementary. These little pantries are about the size of a dresser and are constructed outdoors where families can “take what they need or leave what they can”. This will provide additional food and household goods to those in need.
Mrs. Thompson’s class raised the most money for both causes. For each cause they raised just over $68.
After collecting and totaling the coins, the 4th grade Leaders for this project contacted the Franklin County Humane Society to present a check.
